Refugees in the center

Home is no longer Transcarpathia

After the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war, Enikő from Transcarpathia and her husband did not give up hope. For the future of their unborn child and for their own safety, they knew that they had to start a new life here in Hungary. After nearly two years, they have now managed to buy a house and are trying with all their might to continue the life they started in Transcarpathia.

The Transcarpathians will always remember their home

In Tiszaújlak, Enikő's life was complete. Own house, car, family and friends. In addition, they were expecting their first child with immense joy. They had everything a young couple could wish for. Never in their wildest dreams would they have imagined that a war would begin in their country, and that little boys would be born in Hungary, a in a refugee center see the light of day.

"To this day, we can't process the fact that we can't go home. It can't be, homesickness will always be in us." – Enikő told us when we talked about their old home. The war has been raging for more than two years, and since then their former residence now stands empty and abandoned. In the small village where there was once life, now people are forced to hide. Enikö was greeted by this depressing sight when he returned to his native village after a year and a half. She visited her elderly father, whom she had not seen for more than a year.

Time to move on

A baby boy, Janika, was born in July 2022. It was then that the young couple finally realized that they had to start a new life here. It took two years of persistent searching to find the ideal house in a small village not far from Debrecen.

The young mother emphasized that the clothing vouchers, diapers, and food donations provided them with enormous help. They contributed greatly to achieving their goal of buying their own house.

"It wouldn't have been possible without Dorcas. Subletting is downright expensive. If we had to pay utilities and rent every month, we wouldn't be thinking about moving into our own house right now." –Enikő's husband, János, is also grateful for the support.

Enikő and his family have been living in the Dorcas Refugee Center for more than 2 years

While Enikő raised the little boy at home and ran the household, János tried to take on as many overtime hours at work as possible. Thanks to this, they managed to buy a two-room family house for HUF 7,800,000 with a personal loan and individual savings.

The time spent in Dorcas will remain an eternal memory

Enikő, although he is very much looking forward to moving into their new house, said that they will miss Dorcas. They spent two years in the Refugee center, during which time they became friends with the other residents and developed a relationship of trust with the staff. Despite the forced situation, the young mother looks back on the time she spent here with good memories. She ended our conversation with heartfelt words:

"When Janika is older, I want to show her this place. I tell him that he was born here and that we lived here after we had to leave our country. They took us in and helped us, that's why we now have a home again."

In March 2022, Enikő and János crossed the Ukrainian border with a suitcase in their hands. Now they are planning the future, arranging their new house and hoping that they will be as happy in their new home as when they lived in their native village in Transcarpathia.

The Enikős managed to move on, but there are many refugees who still need help. Support the our refugee mission project, to make it easier for even more families to move on!
